Unpolished Gems

  • Versatile Arts

Unpolished Gems is an opportunity for newer performers to get more experience in front of an audience and for seasoned performers to take risks and try new things. It’s a great place to present work that may not fit into other formats. Our intention is to bring people together to create and strengthen connections in the Seattle area circus community

Everyone is invited to perform and almost any circus or circus-related art is welcome! In the past we’ve had jugglers, magicians, musicians, clowns, belly dancers, and a thing or two we can hardly describe. This time around, in addition to our regular acts we’re going to try something a little different:

The Lightning round!
Don’t want to do a whole act but still want to get in for free? Show us one thing. Whatever you like. Tell a joke, do a juggling trick, stand on your hands, sing a snippet of a song. Try to make it under 60 seconds.

Tickets are $5 presale, $10 at the door, and free for participants in the lightning round. If you want to be in the lightning round and reserve a seat, choose “pay at the door” and send a message to events@versatilearts.net

Dynamic Technique for Verticals
1-3pm
Early Registration $55
After March 23rd, $60

This class will focus on the technique of momentum-based movement. Students will learn the subtleties of beat pathways resulting in increased power and fluidity. Dynamic Technique will provide students with a larger vocabulary of unique entrances and exits into and out of skill while providing the first step to mastering more advanced moves on vertical apparatus.
Prereq: Ability to invert multiple times, straight leg windmill hip-key, straight leg straddle up, ability to stay in the air for 2 minutes.

'Obscureography' for Fabric
3:30-5:30pm
Early Registration $55
After March 23rd, $6

In this workshop we will learn a distinctive piece of choreography using obscure skills and alternative variations of well known movements. Surprising and complex, the piece taught will tell a story with a compelling ascending sequence intertwined with sculptural moments and exciting (but accessible) dynamic flourishes and drops.
Level: Intermediate +
Prereq: Ability to invert multiple times, straight leg straddle up, ability to stay in the air for 2 minutes

Vertical Partnering
6-8pm
Early Registration $55
After March 23rd, $60

This workshop will broaden any students' vocabulary in partnering on rope and silk. New skills and transitions will be introduced; ways of ascending, descending, mirroring, supporting and spinning. An emphasis will be placed on different transitions; switching base and flyer positions in the air to create a fluid partnering dynamic. Students will leave this workshop with new material and a deeper understanding of the various relationships that can be utilized in the air to create their own unique material.

Prereq: Ability to invert multiple times, straight leg straddle up, ability to stay in the air for 2 minutes.
